TECHSOFT Assists First Navy Systems Center to Achieve CMMI® Maturity Level 3
Charleston, S.C. - TECHSOFT has supported Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Atlantic (SSC Atlantic) in becoming the first Navy systems center to achieve an organization-wide Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI®) Maturity Level 3 rating.
SSC Atlantic employs nearly 3,500 personnel who provide systems and software engineering in support of the U.S. Navy and other Department of Defense and government activities worldwide.
TECHSOFT provides a team of CMMI® experts provided appraisal services to SSC Atlantic, including a gap analysis, a series of Standard CMMI® Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPISM) Class B appraisal for individual projects, and finally a formal SCAMPISM Class A for the entire command.
CMMI® is an internationally-recognized structured model for process improvement that measures and improves an organization's ability to successfully plan, manage, and execute complex projects. The result is often improvements in cost, schedule, quality, customer satisfaction, and return on investment. By achieving a ML3 rating, SSC Atlantic demonstrated its engineering capability to consistently produce quality products for its clients, which has enhanced its ability to compete in the global market.
To gauge SSC Atlantic's progress toward higher CMMI® maturity, the organization underwent the most formal type of CMMI® appraisal: a two-week "Class A" Standard CMMI® Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPISM) v1.2 appraisal conducted by a Certified Lead Appraiser from the Software Engineering Institute (SEI). The SCAMPISM was held at SSC Atlantic's Charleston, S.C. location and concluded on April 2, 2010.
The eight-person appraisal team was led by SEI-Certified Lead Appraiser Rick Barbour and included experienced TECHSOFT CMMI® instructors, lead appraisers, and consultants. During the SCAMPISM A, the appraisal team reviewed 16,000 project documents and interviewed more than 150 CMMI® practitioners from 11 SSC Atlantic projects. The projects involved represented a cross-section of the engineering disciplines found at the command's Charleston, New Orleans, and Tidewater business units.
SSC Atlantic's Maturity Level 3 rating is valid for three years, after which the organization must undergo another formal SEI appraisal to determine whether it has continued to follow CMMI® best practices.
